Sharing the Gospel
Looking back on your past week - how you've spent your time, energy and thoughts - what has been your greatest priority?
What's your most memorable time sharing the gospel? It could be an inspiring story or something totally embarrassing!
1) Although the cultural context has changed from the time and place Paul originally preached the gospel, Paul knew then, as we know today, the message would not be well received by many. As you read the passage below be encouraged to emulate Paul's boldness.
Read Romans 1:16
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.
Why did Paul proclaim he wasn't ashamed? What was there to be ashamed of about the gospel in his day?
What's the most difficult thing for you about sharing the gospel?
2) As Blaine pointed out on Sunday, Paul did not hold back from sharing the good news in it's entirety. Even in his sermon to the Athenians, which is often noted for it's diplomatic tact, included the warnings of God's wrath against unrighteousness.
Read Acts 17:29-31
“Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by human design and skill. In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.”
How is the coming day of Judgement part of the good news?
Do you think Jesus' final return and judgement should be looked forward to with hope, reverent fear or both? How has the testimony of scripture shaped your view?
Bringing it home
What opportunities to share the gospel are you looking forward to, or perhaps have missed that your small group can encourage you to follow through with?
Is there anything from your discussion tonight or from Blaine's lesson that will help you share ALL of the good news about Jesus and the Kingdom of God?
